Staying at the Home Farm Glamping

Last Updated on February 11, 2022 by

I never considered the idea of glamping.  Especially the idea of glamping in the UK. Glamping is for weak people I said. Those who can’t bear spiders and who can’t stand the Idea of sleeping on the hard floor, I said. I was a scout, I don’t need glamping, I am a real woman. I SAID.  Oh, man, shut me up. Who want to sleep against the hard floor anymore after having spent a night glamping?!? And, why on earth glamping wasn’t fashionable when a 15 years old me had to do the summer camp???? Home Farm Glamping is one of the nicest glamping sites in the UK and I am very glad to have stayed in one of its lovely tents!

Glamping. An old fashioned thing

For those of you who are still new to the term glamping, this is a mix between the words glamourous and camping. The term is considered an official word (by the OXD) since 2016. Nevertheless, despite this sounds very millennial, the idea of camping in a glamourous way is quite old-fashioned.

I mean, if I think to “glamourous” camps, what comes into my mind are the camps of the early 1920 explorers’ expeditions/safari in Africa, the colonial British in India and the World Quidditch Cup. However, to be precise, the idea of glamping started in a world that still needed to be fully understood and explored. Precisely, when the Ottomans organised sumptuous banquets in luxury tent and this was considered as an occasion to celebrate a fine luxurious extravaganza. Moreover, camps with luxury tents were organised also during military expeditions for high ranked participants but these were not understood as a a form of leisure.

From the Ottomans times, glamorous camping is certainly changed. Indeed, having lost any military/political scope, glamping is now a leisure activity for families and people who like to stay outdoor in a more fashionable way. In this regard, when I think to a glamping tents, I no longer imagine sumptuous banquets on a ground site where illustrious historical figures entertain their guests, but I think to well decorated Weasley-style tents.

Of all the glamping sites in the UK, I barely could imagine there was one at just a few steps away from London! In fact, Home Farm Glamping was both a surprise and a pleasant escape from London’s fast routine. After a stressful week of work, I honestly couldn’t imagine a better place where to unplug and relax.

Our experience at Home Farm Glamping

Despite I’ve been camping before, I was still glamping-virgin and I didn’t know what really expect from this experience. Especially because we were glamping in autum so the range of activities one could do outside were (in theory) pretty limited. However, we were blessed with a marvellous starry night and our stay was nothing less than perfect! Elin was a great host and provided us with everything we needed to have a great stay.

Things to do at Home Farm Glamping

Are you wondering what you can do once you stay at a glamping site? Well, one thing is sure. You won’t get bored! As I said before, we were blessed with an incredible clear and beautiful night. It was a bit windy but not so much to disrupt our plans!

1. Have a Barbecue night

Barbecue night! Apologies for the bad quality picture! This was shot with the phone.

Barbecue outside at the end of September in the UK? Yes Please! It might sound crazy but this is exactly what we did when we arrived at Home Farm Glamping. Make a fire, turning on a BBQ and enjoy a pleasant night with burgers, hot dogs and grilled cheese under the stars. If you are not a BBQ person, there is an on-site cafe,The Meadow. Here you can have a light evening meal, afternoon tea or breakfast. You have to order this in advance when you complete the booking. Otherwise, you can visit one of the local pubs and restaurants located outside the camping area.

2. Stargazing

A second thing we did on our stay was stargazing! For this you need a good camera, a tripod, some experience with long exposure pictures and a bit of patience to find a good spot. Our tent was the perfect subject for night pictures and despite the wind we got some nice pictures of the stars!

3. Enjoy a walk in the nature

Home Farm Glamping is set in 100 acres of farm & woodland. After breakfast, I loved my morning walk! The area is pretty big and there is plenty of corners to explore on your own. Moreover, giving we were visiting in low season, everything was very quiet and lovely!

4. Join one of the activities planned by the camp owners.

If you visits during the summer period you will enjoy a lot more of activities! This includes outdoor yoga, painting, football etc. For a complete list of things to do check the website of Home Farm Glamping.

What tent to choose at Home Farm Glamping

Home Farm Glamping offers two different type of tents. These are, Yurts and Bell Tents. Yurts are bigger and comfy Mongolian-style tents that can sleep up to five people. Bell Tents (the one we used) are a little smaller but beautifully made. They can sleep up to four people and are perfect for couple stays! All the tents are insulated and equipped with blankets, chairs, table and BBQ equipment. Moreover, on your arrival you will receive some necessaries for your stay like stoves, cutlery and marshmallows for the fire!

Breakfast

Breakfast is optional and served outdoor at The Meadow cafe. However, I highly recommend you to include it in your booking as, breakfast is delicious, it is very pleasant to enjoy a warm breakfast outside and the outdoor tent is really nice!

Moreover, I was super glad Elin that provided us with a continental breakfast! I can’t eat British breakfast at morning because it’s too heavy for my stomach and I feel very bad after. However, we were provided with delicious warm pastries and coffee and I loved it!!!

What to bring with you at the glamping site

Home Farm Glamping is well-equipped with everything you need for you stay. This includes BBQ equipment, cushions, cooking equipment, blankets and linen etc. However I recommend you to bring a firelighter (not included in the package), your own towel, warm clothes for the night, wellies in case of wet weather and additional torches (some are provided in your welcome pack). We personally brought an extra blanket. We stayed at the glamping site at the end of September and temperatures are already chill in the UK in that period of the year.

How to reach Home Farm Glamping from London

Home Farm Glamping is located at Elstree at about one hour driving from central London via A41. If you want to use the tube, you should take the Jubilee line till the end and this will leave you at 3 miles from the glamping site. Here you can easily take a 10 minutes taxi.

Glamping is something l have to admit never thought of, but it looks cool. Sleeping under the stars and walking in nature sounds like a calming holiday. Pinning this for the future. For sure the Yurt would suit me better.. I have to ease into it :-).

I am so like you were. I like to think I’m a tough camper. But in the last few years I’ve really been sold on Glamping. This one looks so sweet.
