The Netherlands

The Annex is an ideal place to hide in. It may be damp and lopsided, but there’s probably not a more comfortable hiding place in all of Amsterdam. No, in all of Holland.

– Anne Frank

The Netherlands, the land of flowers, canals, and picturesque villages. A country that surprised me at every single step I took. From the efficient transport system to the kids-friendly cities to the great variety of museums and restaurants I could choose.

I never expected to love the Netherlands so much, but I believe is one of my favourite countries now. My husband goes there often for work, but I happen to visit for the first time only last spring. I was able to get a nice first-timer tour of most places. Particularly those at public-transport distance from Amsterdam. However, this sparked my curiosity for this lovely country, and I am looking forward to exploring it further!

Where is The Netherlands?

The Netherlands is a country in northwestern Europe, also known as Holland. Is bordered by the North Sea in the north and west, by Germany in the east and Belgium in the south.

Travel Information about The Netherlands

The capital city of the Netherlands is Amsterdam. This is a huge hub where most of the traffic in and out of the country is directed (this includes flights and train arrivals from Europe). It can be a little disorienting at first, but you’ll need just a one or two days to get a good sense of the canals way and how to get around.

Netherlands currency is Euro. You can obtain this easily before your trip or when arriving in the country via any exchange office or ATM. Major credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

The main language spoken in Netherlands is Dutch. Nevertheless, English is widely spoken, and we didn’t have any issue in communicating with the lovely Dutch people all over the country.

Same as other countries in Europe, The Netherlands uses the Type F plug. This means that if you are coming from the UK or any other country outside Europe you’ll need an adapter. I always use an universal adapter so that I don’t need to buy one for every destination I visit.

Booking your hotel in advance is essential to avoid last minute scams and stay at your preferred accommodation. I always get the best rates on Booking.com and I booked here all my stays in The Netherlands.

Safety in the Netherlands.

Netherlands is a very safe country. We travelled all around with two small children and never got any issue.

As you will walk a lot in crowded places, particularly in Amsterdam or Rotterdam, I recommend to place your passport and cash in a Invisible Money Belt. My best suggestion is to keep on your wallet only small pieces of cash and hide the rest in the money belt. Indeed, this is very discrete and will ensure you can go around safely and without gaining unwanted attention.
