Did you know that Villa Vizcaya is one of Miami’s hidden gems? In this blog, you will uncover the beauty of this captivating destination nestled between Biscayne Bay and Miami Beach.

The moment I first heard the name Vizcaya in Miami, its exotic and rich Spanish/Portuguese heritage resonated with me. Interestingly, James Deering, the Villa’s former owner, shared the same sentiment. He envisioned naming his grand residence after the renowned Vizcaya Bay in the Spanish Basque Country.

Villa Vizcaya, a hidden architectural jewel in Miami. It boasts a fusion of architectural styles and lush gardens that transport visitors to a different era. Its captivating charm is a testament to the exquisite taste and vision of James Deering.

Discover one of Miami’s hidden gems: A glimpse into the history of Villa Vizcaya.

As you approach Villa Vizcaya, you are instantly transported to a bygone era. The captivating allure of its luscious gardens and the majestic architecture, reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance style, envelop every corner of this remarkable property. The construction of Villa Vizcaya began in 1912, but it wasn’t until 1922 that the villa was finally completed. James Deering, the visionary behind this masterpiece, sought to create a place inspired by the timeless beauty of the Italian Renaissance.

To bring his vision to life, James Deering enlisted the expertise of interior designer Paul Chalfin. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey, traversing Italy in search of the finest examples of Italian antiquities to adorn the villa. Their meticulous efforts resulted in the incorporation of exquisite Italian elements. These elegantly adorn the interior of Villa Vizcaya to this day.

After the completion of the Villa, James Deering used the residence as a venue to entertain his guests, hosting lavish celebrations and events. From November to April each year, the villa would come alive with vibrant activities. Following this period, the dedicated staff would diligently care for the property and the surrounding lands. However, with James Deering’s passing in 1925, the ownership of Villa Vizcaya was transferred to his heirs. These unfortunately lacked interest in maintaining it as a family residence. The devastating hurricane of 1935 further exacerbated the damages, leading to the gradual transformation of the property into a museum.

Villa Vizcaya as part of Miami’s historical heritage

Despite these changes, Villa Vizcaya has retained its significance as a historical landmark in Miami, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s political and social landscape. Today, Vizcaya actively promotes programs and initiatives focused on revitalising the Villa and its neighbourhood. The goal is to transform Villa Vizcaya into a vibrant hub for the local community and tourists alike, providing an idyllic escape from the bustling Miami beaches. Moreover, it serves as a captivating starting point for rediscovering Miami’s rich historical heritage from an unconventional perspective.

Best things to do in Villa Vizcaya

Visit the main house

Exploring the main house is an absolute must when visiting Villa Vizcaya. As the centerpiece of the property, the main house boasts two floors that are open to the public. Inside, you’ll discover an extensive collection of artifacts from different corners of the world, paying homage to various cultures. The Italian influence is especially prominent. Indeed, this is particularly visible in Paul Chalfin’s meticulous interior design taking inspiration from captivating Italian cities like Palermo and Venice. Prepare to be immersed in the opulence and grandeur of these Italian-inspired spaces. You will be amazed as you wander through the main house’s exquisite rooms and marvel at the intricate details that transport you to another time and place.

Don’t skip the Garden Mound

One hidden gem within the Villa Vizcaya gardens is the Garden Mound. Indeed, this is an impressive artificial hill adorned with subtropical gardens and unique architectural features. This hidden treasure offers a distinct perspective of Villa Vizcaya, allowing visitors to admire the estate from a different vantage point. In addition to its scenic views, the Garden Mound provides a welcome respite from the warm Florida sun, offering a shady retreat.

Interestingly, many visitors tend to overlook this part of the garden, making it a serene and tranquil spot to explore. It’s a true hidden gem within the larger Villa Vizcaya experience. Moreover, the fact that I could enjoy it without the crowds enhances its appeal!

Meet the Iguanas

Villa Vizcaya is not only a haven for stunning architecture and lush gardens but also a habitat for a diverse group of iguanas. These fascinating creatures roam around in various areas of the property. From gracefully swimming in the harbour to leisurely basking under the shade of trees. While they are a sight to behold, it’s important to note that iguanas at Villa Vizcaya are not famous for their friendliness.

Indeed, If you wish to capture photographs of these captivating reptiles, it’s advisable to use a zoom lens to maintain a safe distance. It’s essential not to approach them directly, especially the larger ones. In fact, they may exhibit defensive behaviour and could potentially bite. Respecting their space and observing them from a distance allows a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Enjoy Biscayne Bay from a unusual perspective

An intriguing architectural feature at Villa Vizcaya is the “Barge,” a unique structure reminiscent of a Venetian ship. This remarkable construction serves as a nod to the Venetian docks and adds a touch of whimsy to the estate. From the Barge, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the expansive Biscayne Bay. This provides a fresh and captivating perspective of the surroundings.

For those with extra time and a desire for a more immersive experience, renting a jet ski offers an exciting opportunity to admire Villa Vizcaya from the water. Search for the Villa Vizcaya’s hidden gem – The Arbour Tea House

One of the most enchanting spots at Villa Vizcaya (and personally my favourite) is the Tea House. This charming cloister situated by the water exudes romance and offers breathtaking views of the bay. It is undeniably one of the most distinctive structures within the entire property.

The Tea House’s allure is such that it has become a popular location for wedding proposals. Its idyllic setting, blessed by the warm sunshine and the gentle sounds of the waves, creates a magical ambiance that sets the stage for unforgettable moments.

It’s fascinating to note that the Deering family themselves used the Tea House as a location for their afternoon tea. I don’t know why but I can really imagine the family enjoying their tea here. Surrounded by the beauty of Villa Vizcaya and the serene waters of the bay.

Whether you’re savouring a quiet moment alone, taking in the stunning views, or contemplating a romantic proposal, the Tea House offers a truly unforgettable experience. Its unique charm, combined with the idyllic surroundings, makes it a must-visit destination within the Villa Vizcaya grounds.

Taste a light lunch at the Vizcaya Café and Shop

Situated near the Pool Grotto, the Vizcaya Café and Shop provides a welcome respite. Particularly after a half-day of exploration within the villa and its enchanting gardens. It serves as a relaxing stop where visitors can unwind and recharge. Miami’s Hidden Gems – Villa Vizcaya arbour

Despite certain areas of Villa Vizcaya experiencing visible signs of decadence, particularly near the mangroves, this aspect can add to the property’s fascination and historical ambiance. In fact, as you take a leisurely stroll around the harbour, you’ll come across sections of Vizcaya that evoke the spirit of Venice. One of the highlights is the iconic swimming pool, which boasts a mural by Robert Winthrop Chanler, making it one of only two public sites in the world to showcase his artwork.
